1st Airborne Command and Control Squadron

The 1st Airborne Command and Control Squadron is one of the oldest squadrons in US service, having been established as a balloon company (yes, a balloon company) of the US Army Aviation Section in 1917. The company spotted enemy positions from observation balloons during the First World War, and continued after the war as balloon squadron until 1942, when it was converted to ferrying duties for World War II and redesignated 1st Ferrying Squadron. After WWII the squadron was inactivated until 1969 to operate the USA's flying command post in the event of a massive nuclear strike, one of the most serious and critical operations of the Cold War. The 1st flew a reserve general officer to be in overall command in the event the commander-in-chief was out of command - this mission was pursued constantly until the wind-down after the end of the Cold War, when the flying command post was set to ready alert status on the ground as much as in the air.

The 55th Operations Group started as the 55 Pursuit Group, soon redesignated the 55th Fighter Group, which flew missions based in the United Kingdom from 1943-1945 against Germany, mainly long range bomber escort. The 55th excelled at this, as they flew the long range P-38 Lightning, one of the longest range, most fire-concentrated fighter planes of the period. The 55th was highly effective with the Lightnings, a particularly well armed, fast, and maneuverable fighter, but a challenge to fly and had an undeserved nasty reputation. The 55th flew over 600 missions and scored over 400 victories with over 100 partials - an excellent record for WWII. Once air superiority was established, the 55th engaged in ground target strikes against anything of use to the Germans. Over the course of the war the 55th Fighter Group earned a Distinguished Unit Citation, and had flown 16 aces. In 1946 the 55th Fighter Group was inactivated and later reactivated as the 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Group, which spent a few years probing the aerial borders of the Soviet Bloc. The 55th SRG was inactivated again in 1952, with its history continued by the 55th Wing. The 55th Operations Group reactivated in 1991 to perform reconnaissance duties.

The 55th Wing was established in 1950 from the older 55th Pursuit Group (Fighting Fifty-Fifth!), which dated from World War II, in which it had performed escort and other duties. (See the 55th Operations Group for more World War II history.) After the war the 55th had converted to a long range reconnaissance mission, charting, mapping, photographing, and generally feeling out the capability of the Soviet Bloc. The newly established 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing continued this mission, keeping an eye on the borderlands of America�s Cold War rival until the mid-1960s, when the 55th acquired the 1st and 2nd Airborne Command and Control Squadrons, responsible for post attack command post aircraft. The 1st ACCS is still operating, with a modified mission. The 55th SRW spent the Cold War watching Soviet and Chinese activities, including playing an important reconnaissance role in the Cuban Missile Crisis, the invasion of Grenada, and other operations worldwide. Since the end of the Cold War, the 55th has decreased moderately in size, and upgraded in technology, but remains one of the largest Air Force wings, and continues to provide intelligence to theater commanders. In Operations Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom the 55th provided critical real time information for air and ground forces.
